Roots

The Sons of The American Legion was created in 1932 as a program within The American Legion. The SAL is made up of boys and men of all ages whose parents or grandparents served in the United States military and became eligible for membership in The American Legion. Together, members of The American Legion, The American Legion Auxiliary and the Sons of The American Legion make up what is known as the Legion Family. All three organizations place high importance on preserving our American traditions and values, improving the quality of life for our nation's children, caring for veterans and their families, and perhaps most importantly, teaching the fundamentals of good citizenship.

The American Legion itself was formed in 1919 as an act of congress. At that time, following WWI, the war was dubbed “the war to end all wars” and it was believed the world would never experience anything like it again. Some 23 years later it was commonly thought that when the WWI veterans started fading away, so would The American Legion, so the Sons of the American Legion was formed. That line of thought obviously proved to be erroneous, but the Sons experienced steady growth ever since; as of July 10, 2025, the SAL stands just under 400,000 strong!

Since 1988, SAL has raised more than $9 million for The American Legion Child Welfare Foundation. SAL members have volunteered over 500,000 hours at veterans’ hospitals and raised over $1,000,000 for VA hospitals and VA homes. The SAL also supports the Citizens Flag Alliance, a coalition dedicated to protecting the U.S. flag from desecration through a constitutional amendment.

As stated in our Preamble, we are “Proud possessors of a priceless heritage…”
